Slideshow: Columns come home to Sylvan Theater
The Sylvan Theater is back to normal after several months without its columns. The columns — which are all that remain of the original, downtown Territorial University Building that was razed in 1908 — were removed last fall to be repaired. The work was funded by contributions from the Class of 1956 for their 50th reunion.
Twenty-two Facilities Services staffers were involved in the work, which included replacing the columns’ wooden bases with concrete replicas and cleaning and painting the columns themselves. Over spring break, a crew performed the arduous task of moving the columns back home, and our photographer was there to record the journey.
The return of the columns represents the final step in a complete overhaul of the Sylvan Theater. Back in 2005, some trees were removed and others planted, new stairs were constructed for the theater’s natural stage and new systems were installed for drainage and irrigation.
The completion of the work comes none too soon, as the Sylvan Theater is the most used outdoor space on campus, and is particularly popular for graduation events.
