WE’RE IN PICTURES: Florentine Films, Ken Burns’ film production company (though not Burns himself), is at the UW Libraries Special Collections division through July 23 to film images for an upcoming film on National Parks.

Nicolette Bromberg, Visual Materials Curator for UW Libraries, will work with the production team to guide them through images from the Libraries archives, including the Mountaineers collection, consisting of 16,298 prints from 1907 to 1951 of outings, hikes and climbs by members of the Mountaineers; images from the Seattle Camera Club, including a home movie taken on a trip to Mt. Rainer by Iwao Matsushita.

The Seattle Camera Club was a group of foreign- and American- born Japanese amateur photographers, in existence from 1926 to 1929.

The photographs the Burns people will be looking at represent only a fraction of those in the libraries’ collections, which include over 1,000,000 documentary images covering an extensive geographical area, in particular western Washington, Alaska, and the Yukon, including such topics as Native Americans, fishing and logging industries, mountaineering, the Klondike gold rush. Included are the works of early notable Washington Territory and regional photographers such as Edward S. Curtis, Asahel Curtis, Eric. A. Hegg, and Clark Kinsey.

CASH FOR SPORTS: Partnership for Youth, a collaborative effort based in the UW’s School of Social Work that serves the homeless kids in the University District, is in the midst of a two-week pledge drive to raise money and awareness to support healthy sports activities for homeless youth and young adults.

The drive began with a softball game and BBQ on July 16, and will end with a second game on July 30 at 1 p.m. at University Playfield. The games pit the homeless youth against staff of the service providers in the area. If you’d like to contribute to the drive, contact Partnership for Youth Coordinator Rick Eberhardt, re28@u.washington.edu
