Alderwood play area to open

The “Healthy Heart Station,” a play area at Alderwood, supported by UW Medicine Regional Heart Center, will have its grand opening on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Located within the super-regional lifestyle center near Sears, the 1,200-square-foot, heart-shaped play area features a fun and educational theme that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle for children. Complimenting the theme are heart graphics and a “playground” environment that underscores the messages. The play area is presented by UW Medicine Regional Heart Center with support from the American Heart Association, UW Physicians and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center. It will serve as a hub for information that is specifically designed to keep every member of the family heart-healthy. Informational brochures, posters, free health screenings and monthly health talks are planned as part of UW Medicine’s ongoing partnership with Alderwood.

The opening festivities will include remarks by Dr. Larry Dean, director of the UW Medicine Regional Heart Center; “goodie” bags for the first 500 children 8 and younger; and activities for children, including face painters, balloon artists, jugglers and magicians .

In May, the UW Medicine Regional Heart Center will open a cardiology clinic across from Alderwood at 18631 Alderwood Mall Blvd.

“We are committed at UW Medicine to providing health information and promoting healthy lifestyles to the community,” said Dean, a UW professor of cardiology. “The Healthy Heart Station will be a safe, fun place for children and their families to learn and play at the same time.”
