Harborview Presents

Seattle, WA ? Harborview Medical Center will host an educational event for stroke survivors, their families and friends from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Harborview Research and Training Building, 300 9th Ave., Seattle.

This free half-day event, held during Stroke Awareness Month, will feature lectures, hands-on demonstrations and information for the general public. Stroke survivors, their families and friends will find a wealth of information for dealing with the many physical and emotional effects of stroke.

Noted speakers will include:

o Dr. Kyra Becker, UW assistant professor of neurology at the UW Stroke Center at Harborview ? acute therapy for stroke.
o Dr. David Tirshwell, attending physician at Harborview ? stroke prevention.
o Dr. David Newell, UW professor of neurological surgery at Harborview ? surgical issues in stroke.
o Dr. David Yu, UW assistant professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Harborview ? new treatments in stroke rehabilitation.
o Dr. Charles Bombardier, Ph.D., rehabilitation psychologist at Harborview ? post-stroke depression.

Lecture topics will include: Ask the Pharmacist, Ask the Physician Neurologist; Animal-Assisted Therapy; What?s New in Stroke Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation; Financial Planning; Post-Stroke Depression, Post-Stroke Cognitive Speech Disorders; Ask the Social Worker; and Legal Issues in Stroke. There will be blood pressure checks, nutrition information, smoking cessation information and demonstrations of recreation equipment.
