News and Information

Seattle Campus Information

The University of Washington Seattle campus enrollment for autumn quarter 2000 is 36,139, including 862 students in the Evening Degree Program.

Undergraduate enrollment is 25,987 and graduate/professional is 10,152.

Last year’s headcount was 35,559.

New freshmen, those entering the UW directly from high school, total 4,983, an increase of 468 (10 percent) over 1999. The grade-point average for the new class is 3.64, up from 3.63, and the average Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score is 1162, a slight increase from 1158. The average Admission Index for the class, which is derived from a formula that combines grade-point averages and SAT scores, weighting them at 75 percent and 25 percent, respectively, is 75, up from 74 in 1999.

The enrollments of new underrepresented freshmen (African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic/Latinos, and Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders) increased by 19.9 percent. The changes from 1999 to 2000, by ethnic group, are African American, from 83 to 122 (up 47 percent); American Indian, 41 to 50 (up 22 percent); Hispanic/Latino, 131 to 123 (down 6 percent); Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 11 to 24 (up 118 percent); Asian American, 1,107 to 1,269 (up 15 percent); and Caucasian, 2,439 to 2,748 (up 13 percent). The number of international students increased from 52 to 119 (up 129 percent). Freshmen choosing not to identify with a particular ethnic group declined from 651 to 528 (down 19 percent).

Autumn 2000 underrepresented freshman enrollments are for the most part encouraging, but the numbers are still below autumn 1998 levels, the last year before the passage of Initiative 200, which banned the use of race in college and university admissions, among other things. Autumn 1998 underrepresented freshman numbers were African American, 124; American Indian, 53; Hispanic/Latino, 196; and Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 38.

For autumn 2000, students of color total 9,555 and represent 26.4 percent of the overall enrollments (up from 26.2 percent), 30.6 percent of undergraduate enrollments (up from 30.1 in 1999), and 15.7 percent of graduate and professional enrollments (down from 16.1 percent).

The enrollments of new underrepresented graduate students increased by 31 percent. The changes from 1999 to 2000, by ethnic group, are African American, from 34 to 48 (up 41 percent); American Indian, 20 to 21 (up 5 percent); Hispanic/Latino, 40 to 51 (up 28 percent); Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 1 to 4 (up 300 percent); Asian American, 223 to 212 (down 5 percent); and Caucasian, 1,519 to 1,535 (up 1 percent). Graduate students choosing not to identify with a particular ethnic group rose from 225 to 227 (up .9 percent).

Over half of the students are women, numbering 18,683 or 51.7 percent.

The University’s Seattle campus record enrollment figure is 37,547, set in 1979.

All ethnicity data are based on information voluntarily self-reported by students. The data for the Seattle campus include students who originally did not report their ethnic affiliations in the application process, opting instead for the category of “Not Indicated,” but who subsequently did provide the information in response to a survey based on first day enrollments.
