Singapore opposition leader to speak at UW on free speech

WHO: Dr. Chee Soon Juan, former minister of parliament and lecturer at National University of Singapore, is general secretary of the Singapore Democratic Party. Author of several books on democracy and freedom and an outspoken advocate of political reform, Dr. Juan recently spent two weeks in jail for giving public talks without permits required by Singapore law.

WHAT: Dr. Chee will be giving a lecture titled “Free Speech and the Political Maturation of Singapore.” The lecture, sponsored by the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies, is free and open to the public.

WHEN: 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16 ( Dr. Chee will be available for questions from the media immediately following the lecture.)

WHERE: Thompson Hall Room 317. Thompson Hall is located northwest of the HUB on the UW main campus.
