Lay Hold! A Directional Toolkit for the Associated Students of the University of Washington Shell House stəx̌ʷugʷił

Project Thesis by Emma (EJ) Opsal

The purpose of this project was to create a toolkit for the Associated Students of the University of Washington Shell House stəx̌ʷugʷił Advisory Board to assist the Advisory Board in developing recommendations for the benefit of the ASUW Shell House. The Advisory Board consisted of community members with various interests in the site to influence the decisions regarding the site’s future use and activities. From July 2018 to July 2020, University of Washington Recreation undertook a capital campaign to restore the ASUW Shell House stəx̌wugwił, a repurposed WWI seaplane hangar located on a historic site adjacent to Husky Stadium. As the campaign transitioned from the fundraising stage to the design input stage of the campaign, there was need for a consensus building set of practices to create and expedite recommendations from the Advisory Board in its work to support the ASUW Shell House. The resultant project toolkit, Lay Hold! A Decision Making Toolkit for the Associated Students of the University of Washington Shell House stəx̌wugwił, prescribed the necessary tools to enable this board to direct their energies effectively. Additionally, the deliverable provided historical context to enable board members, both new and old, to make informed recommendations. This toolkit may also be used for other advisory groups looking to effectively build their own cultural site within an already existing institution. It is recommended that this toolkit be implemented as soon as possible.
