Available Now: A New Hazing Prevention Toolkit

The UW Hazing Prevention and Response Program is excited to announce the release of a new University of Washington Hazing Prevention Toolkit, available now on the Guides & Toolkits section of the Hazing Prevention website.

This toolkit was developed specifically with the UW community in mind, with the latest information and resources students, parents and families, faculty and staff, and other community members could benefit from knowing about hazing. While the Hazing Prevention and Response Program has made various resource guides available to the campus community over the years, the Hazing Prevention Toolkit marks the most comprehensive resource on hazing for the University to date.

Key information in the Toolkit includes:

  • An overview of what hazing is, including the definition of hazing under Sam’s Law, the HARM acronym for identifying hazing, and examples of hazing behaviors
  • A list of possible signs an individual may be experiencing hazing
  • A discussion of socio-ecological factors that drive hazing and ways UW addresses them
  • An overview of state and federal legislation on hazing
  • Specific approaches students, parents, faculty and staff, and student group advisors can take to engage in hazing prevention, including steps for bystander intervention
  • Resources for reporting hazing at UW and sample hazing reports

The Hazing Prevention Toolkit was designed for sharing, so most pages can be printed, downloaded, and circulated as individual resources. With this resource, the Hazing Prevention and Response Program hopes to build a knowledgeable, well-resourced, and collaborative community dedicated to hazing prevention.
