TRIP for Students

All UW students – graduate and undergraduate – who are traveling outside the U.S. for UW purposes but not enrolled through UW Study Abroad.

This includes students attending international meetings and conferences.

Traveling for University purposes includes travel and activities abroad that are funded, sponsored, administered, arranged, or approved by the University. Travel with a Registered Student Organization (RSO), that is not otherwise funded or supported by the University, and personal travel such as a vacation is NOT travel for University purposes.

  • If you are doing fieldwork, research, or participating in a study abroad program not affiliated with UW Study Abroad then you should register for Field Research and Independent Learning Abroad (FRILA).
  • International students also need to register any time they are traveling for University purposes including when traveling to their home country.

  • Your registration will be processed immediately and you will receive a confirmation email.
  • Please also register your travel with the U.S. Embassy / Consulate through the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
  • Within your MyGlobal registration, you will be asked to enroll in UW Student Abroad Insurance, including downloading and activating International SOS. Your student account will be automatically charged for your international insurance based on the duration of your time abroad.
  • You will be provided 24/7 emergency contact information.
  • You may be required to submit a travel waiver, if applicable.
  • Sign the Assumption of Risk.

The UW International Travel Registry allows us to provide emergency support and resources to UW travelers abroad; it does not replace your departmental approval process.

Travel Waivers are required for students going to countries defined by the Department of State as:

  • Level 1 or 2 with high risk (Level 3 and 4) regions
  • Level 3 national advisory
  • Level 4 national advisory

Travel waivers are reviewed and approved by Global Travel Health and Safety.

Travel by students to a Level 3 or 4 region or country requires additional approvals from the International Travel Risk Assessment Committee (ITRASC) and the University Provost. A review will be compiled based on the information in your travel waiver. Your travel will not be authorized by the University until that approvals process is complete.

If you know you will be traveling to a Level 3 or 4 region or country, you should register the travel and complete the waiver as soon as possible. ITRASC requests 45 days notice for travel waiver requests.

  • After clicking the registry link above, you will be asked to login with your UW NetID.
  • Fill in your itinerary, providing details including your destination and dates of travel.
  • Complete all required forms within the registration.
