MAY 2015

From the work that you do to the passion with which you do it, you play a critical part in our shared mission: the UW’s campaign.

Our sincere gratitude goes out to all who attended — and to all whose work contributed to — the Campaign Volunteer Leadership Summit on April 24. This convocation of volunteer and academic leadership was an important moment in the campaign. It also represented the outstanding work of leaders from throughout the institution, who have been bringing expertise and focus to campaign planning and preparation since the nucleus phase began in 2013.

We’re a team! Over the next 18 months, we will be joining forces to continue building the groundwork for success. Together we will accomplish amazing goals in support of our UW.

Let’s go!

The Campaign Volunteer Leadership Summit

On April 24, campaign chairs and co-chairs from throughout the University gathered with the UW Foundation Board directors, the executive committee of the UWAA Board of Trustees, and academic and advancement leaders at the Campaign Volunteer Leadership Summit. This inaugural gathering of lead volunteers represents an important marker in the nucleus phase of the campaign as we accelerate toward the public launch. See the full program and materials.

Highlights included:

  • Unit vision discussions: Over lunch, volunteers rolled up their sleeves with deans and chancellors to discuss unit visions and priorities, generating valuable feedback that will help to refine this important messaging. These conversations will continue through summer, informing revised drafts that will be compiled in August.
  • Campaign progress: Updates on campaign progress and timeline were provided, and UW campaign counsel Martin Grenzebach shared information about university campaigns across the country and confirmed the UW’s good positioning for success.
  • Facilitated discussions: Small groups generated valuable information in response to two important questions:
    • What can the UW do or provide to help volunteers be successful?
    • What opportunities can volunteers help the UW leverage for a successful public launch
      of the campaign?
  • Inspiration: In closing remarks, Dan Evans shared the UW’s story, including little-known gems, like how the opening stanza in Lord Byron’s “The Destruction of Sennacherib” inspired the selection of the UW’s colors. Read the full text of Dan’s remarks. In a moment that will inspire those who were present for years to come, Bill Gates Sr. encouraged the leaders in the room to continue the deep tradition of strong support for the UW, noting that nothing is as powerful as a pack of Huskies focused on a shared goal.

Discussion feedback, currently being transcribed and analyzed, will inform both volunteer resources and support and strategic decision-making about the campaign launch. A summary of discussion themes will be shared in the next Campaign Update.
