Mae Benne taught children’s literature from 1965 to 1988 as well as acting as the Library School director in the 1970s. When Mae retired from the University of Washington Department of Library Science she volunteered for more than ten years for Special Collections. This included working with the on-going Pamela Harer historical children’s book donation, as well as a three year project researching a gift of 1,500 Native American children’s books. Mae facilitated major and minor gifts to Special Collections from friends and colleagues. The most significant of these being from UW Library School retired faculty member Spencer Shaw, whose 200 book collection contained numerous inscribed copies by the most important children’s writers and illustrators in the field. Mae also donated her own collection of over 300 books. Mae passed away at the age of 93 in 2017, but the two endowments for Children’s Literature that she established continue the work on the collections that she valued.
