The University of Washington generates $12.5 billion a year in economic activity and supports 79,331 direct and indirect jobs in the state of Washington, according to a new economic impact report released Thursday by an independent research firm.
Total economic impact measures the dollars generated in the state as a result of the UW’s presence, including its three campuses and UW Medicine. The new study updates a previous one conducted in 2009 that showed the UW had an economic impact of $9.1 billion. The UW employs 34,668 people and is the third-largest nonfederal employer in the state, following Boeing and Microsoft.

Mark Pagano has been selected as chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma. His appointment is effective March 16 and is subject to approval b the UW Board of Regents. Pagano currently serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Montana State University. Read more from UW Today.

House and Senate Appropriators unveiled a $1.1 trillion spending package yesterday. The FY15 appropriations packaged, dubbed the “cromnibus,” would provided new funding for all government agencies and programs with the exception of the Department of Homeland Security. It will fund the federal government for the remainder of 2015 fiscal year and contains a continuing resolution (CR) funding homeland security through February 2015.
