Initiative, EarthLab event builds cross-disciplinary climate change connections

Climate researchers engage in a discussion while seated at a tableThe Population Health Initiative and EarthLab hosted approximately 45 University of Washington faculty, staff and graduate students in an Open Space-style event in the UW wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House on October 23, 2023, to help facilitate the development of new interdisciplinary collaborations to take on pressing climate-related challenges. This was the second Fostering Climate Change Connections event, following the inaugural offering that took place on April 11, 2023.

The attendees at the October 23 event set the agenda, offering to convene discussions on pressing challenges where collaboration was sought. The topics of discussion included adaptation to climate extremes in the Pacific Northwest, carbon sequestration, carbon offsets, coastal adaptation, behavior change and the centering of community in research. Those in attendance reported the event was a positive experience, so the Initiative and EarthLab will plan to organize a similar event in winter quarter 2024.
