Expertise: Arctic sea ice, climate change

Cecilia Bitz, professor and chair of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, has a research focus on polar climate change. She is an expert on climate prediction and works with models and observations of the earth system. She uses a variety of models for her research, from simple reduced models to sophisticated earth-system models. Cecilia’s group has recently written papers about Arctic sea ice predictability, extreme sea ice loss at both poles, sea ice data assimilation, and polar amplification. She has testified before the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Arctic climate change, and she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to New Zealand, during which time she did field work in Antarctica.
