Pacific Northwest Band Festival Feb. 4-5

Select middle school and high school student band musicians will perform with the UW Wind Ensemble, directed by Timothy Salzman, during the 20th Annual Pacific Northwest Band Festival Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 4 and 5 at Meany Hall.

Middle school students will perform with the Wind Ensemble at 5:30 p.m. Monday, and the high school students at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Donna Shin, UW faculty artist, will be the featured soloist, playing the flute during the Feb. 5 performance. The performances are free and open to the public.

The UW Wind Ensemble is the select wind ensemble at the UW and comprises the finest wind and percussion players on campus. The UW Wind Ensemble has performed at a number of prestigious music conventions, has presented several world premiere performances of outstanding new music for the wind band and, at the invitation of the All Japan Band Association, undertook a highly acclaimed nine-day concert tour of the Kansai region of Japan in March of 2004, returning for a more extensive tour of that country in March of 2007.

Donna Shin is in her first year as assistant professor of flute at the UW School of Music. Prior to this appointment she served on the faculties of the University of South Carolina and Oklahoma State University. Shin attended Mercer Island public schools from fifth grade through high school. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, where she also received the Performer’s Certificate and was selected winner of the Eastman School of Music concerto competition. Shin received her Master of Music degree and Graduate Diploma with Distinction in Performance from the New England Conservatory, where she studied with Paula Robison and appeared as concerto soloist with the Contemporary Ensemble and the Conservatory Wind Ensemble.

Shin returned to the Eastman School of Music to pursue the Doctor of Musical Arts degree and became the first woodwind player in the history of the Eastman School to be nominated for the highly coveted Artist’s Certificate.
