Denman series tackles menace of invasives

News and Information

Alien invaders skulking about in the Pacific Northwest face exposure Wednesday, June 2, during “Invasive species: Impacts of invasive plants, animals, insects and diseases in the Pacific Northwest,” at the University of Washington’s College of Forest Resources.

The panel presentation from 1 to 4 p.m. in Anderson Hall, part of the College’s Denman Forestry Issues Series, is free and open to the public but seating is limited so reserve spots by contacting Ellen Matheny at ematheny@u.washington.edu .

A number of these invaders are already damaging natural ecosystems, agricultural and industrial forestlands, and shorelines.

Panelists from the College of Forest Resources will be Bob Edmonds, professor of forest soil microbiology and forest pathology; Bob Gara, professor of forest entomology; Sarah Reichard, assistant professor of urban conservation biology; John Marzluff, professor of wildlife sciences; and Miranda Wecker, marine program manager with the UW’s Olympic Natural Resources Center in Forks, Wash. The Washington state Department of Agriculture’s Brad White, a pest program manager, will speak about management strategies for invasives.
