UW names 1996 Martin scholar
Gary Stielow, a transfer student coming to the University of Washington from Green River Community College, has been selected as the 1996 Martin Scholar.
The selection was made by the Martin Family Foundation Board of Directors and representatives from the UW. Established in 1995, the scholarship program enables community college students of exceptional ability and outstanding achievement to complete their baccalaureate degrees at the UW. Applicants are considered for superior strength of character, intellectual ability, and sense of purpose.
As a Martin scholar, Stielow will receive $4,000 to cover tuition and books. The award is renewable for up to three years’ support with continued high scholarship at the UW.
Stielow earned an Associate in Arts degree and an Associate Pre-Professional degree in engineering from Green River. He earned a 3.9 grade point average while working part-time at Green River’s Veterans Affairs Office. He volunteers for the Science Olympiad Competition teaching science and math to junior and senior high school students, and enjoys spending time with his wife and three year old daughter. He will begin civil engineering studies at the UW this fall. He is a resident of Auburn.
Fifty students submitted completed applications, five of whom were selected for interviews. Finalists included: Adrian Croft of Grays Harbor (Grays Harbor Community College), Liv Greene of Seattle (Edmonds Community College), Jessica Ortega of Seattle (Shoreline Community College), and Sandy Peron of Mukilteo (Everett Community College).
“This year’s pool of applicants was extraordinary,” said Lori Colliander, coordinator of the undergraduate scholarship program at the UW. “I was impressed with each of the five interviewees–their academic records are amazing. I’m happy they each have chosen to transfer to the UW. We’ll be seeing great things from these students.”
“This is one of many new partnerships between community colleges and the UW,” said Louis Fox, UW’s associate vice provost for undergradu ate education. “This new scholarship program allow some of the state’s top students to pursue their studies at the UW, and we’re very pleased that the Martin Family Foundation has created this innovative award.”
