Kirkland group that will compete in New Zealand for the America’s Cup is using the Kirsten Wind Tunnel in a bid for sleeker, faster sailboats

WHO:

OneWorld Challenge, a Kirkland-based syndicate that will compete in New Zealand next year for the America’s Cup, the world’s premier sailing competition.

WHAT:

Wind-tunnel testing of the group’s racing boat keels in an effort to make a faster boat.

WHEN:

Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHERE:

The Kirsten Wind Tunnel on the UW campus. The wind tunnel building is located off of Stevens Way, just south of the Husky Union Building.

DETAILS:

Members of OneWorld Challenge, a local organization that will compete in New Zealand as a challenger in the 2003 America’s Cup, have been using the UW’s Kirsten Wind Tunnel to test keels in a bid for the perfect boat design. The group is opening up its testing for a day so the media can get an inside look at the process. Winfried Feifel, an engineer with OneWorld Challenge who is leading the testing effort, will be available to talk with reporters.
