President Young to address University community Oct. 12

President Michael Youngs first annual address to the University of Washington community will take place from 3:30 to 4: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in 130 Kane.

Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity receives $3.96 million GEAR UP grant

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Education and will fund GEAR UP programs serving low-income middle and high school students in the Skagit and Yakima Valley regions of Washington state as well as two new districts in the Columbia Basin.

The UW College of Educations Center for Educational Leadership is celebrating 10 years of fine work with school districts regionally and across the country, working for equity and excellence in the classroom.

UW Tacoma has launched a new partnership with Zipcar, Inc. to offer a car-sharing program on campus. Zipcar now will offer cars to UW Tacoma students, faculty and staff members ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over.

Hall Health will be showing off its remodeled digs at an open house for the upper campus community from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. An open house for the health sciences community will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. Tours will be offered on both days.

The Common Books purpose is to give first-year students a shared experience over a common text. Who better to spark discussion than physicist Richard Feynman, whose 1963 UW lectures comprise the book.

UW Graduate School recognizes outstanding dissertations, thesis

The UW Graduate School has awarded its 2011 Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation and Thesis Awards to Aurelia Honerkamp-Smith and Maria Grigoryeva respectively, and its 6th Chapter Award to John Hoekman.

Sixteen regions of the genetic code newly discovered to influence lung function

The discovery of 16 additional sections of the human genome that influence lung function brings the total known variants to 26. These findings in the genetic code hold promise for future screenings and treatment of lung disease.

Dr. Waranuch Pitiphat of Thailands Khon Kaen University urged UW dental students to consider global oral health research. At the poster presentation after her talk, Peter Yamamura won the annual dental student research competition.

Hormonal contraception use doubles HIV risk, according to UW study in Lancet

A UW-led study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases shows a troubling link between hormonal contraception and HIV. The study is getting widespread press coverage because of the popularity of injectable birth control like Depo-Provera in parts of Africa hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic.

The Fogarty International Center award is part of a federal effort to ameliorate the epidemic of non-communicable diseases in developing countries.

Community effort brings lasting drop in smoking, delinquency, drug use

Tenth graders in towns using Communities That Care, a prevent system developed by UW School of Social Work researchers, were less likely to have tried drinking or smoking and showed less delinquent behavior.

British ambassador to U.S.: Partnerships, higher ed are key in responding to Asian growth

Nations such as China and India are surging ahead, but the West should be careful not to overestimate, misinterpret the changes or “become paralyzed by fear of our own decline,” British ambassador to the U.S. Nigel Sheinwald told a UW international studies class during a visit to campus.

A new era in University of Washington student housing is beginning this month as Housing & Food Services opens two new buildings — one with student apartments and the other a residence hall with a powerful commitment to sustainability.

Mac Parks shares an award from the National Communication Association with UW alum Kory Floyd; Frances McCue wins a Washington State Book Award for poetry; a journal article by W. Lance Bennett is among the top-cited for 2010; Amanda Bruner, Lekelia Jenkins and Sharon Sutton are honored by Northwest Asian Weekly for environmental work, and the UW is noted for environmental achievment by Seattle Magazine and the Princeton Review.

Friday Harbor is available for scholarly pursuits, grants are sought for alcohol or drug abuse-related fields, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center conducts a smoking cessation study.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the UW scientists have conducted the first comprehensive assessment of DNA errors that drive advanced prostate cancer.

The Carpe Diem String Quartet performs at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Meany Hall. The group will perform works by Sowash, Mendelssohn, Monti, Piazzola and its own violist, Korine Fujiwara.

Joel Ngugi, associate professor of law, was recently appointed a judge of the High Court of Kenya, which has unlimited original jurisdiction in criminal and civil matters and is primary on constitutional issues.

NW biofuels coming of age with $80 million in separate projects led by UW, WSU

Two UW scientists honored by President Obama

Two UW faculty members were announced by President Obama as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.

UW Medicine hosts an open house Saturday, October 1, at a new primary care clinic in the Ravenna neighborhood near University Village.
