Hazing Prevention Employee Course

“Hazing Prevention: It’s Everyone’s Responsibility” is a foundational, required online course about hazing prevention and response. In partnership with AliveTek and developed in collaboration with the Hazing Prevention Network, the course offers evidence-based best practices to help you identify, prevent, and report hazing effectively.

After completing “Hazing Prevention: It’s Everyone’s Responsibility”, employees will be able to: 

  • Summarize the definition of hazing
  • Describe the signs and dangers of hazing
  • Identify multiple ways to report hazing concerns or allegations to the University

Employee Course Completion Expectations

Employees include all staff, faculty, other academic personnel, student employees, and select individuals from UW Medicine and the School of Medicine. Completion of the is required for:

  • New employees must complete the course within 30 days of their start date.
  • Current employees must complete the course once during the fiscal year. A specific timeline and compliance check are handled through each unit.
  • Student employees must complete the student course only. They are not required to complete both courses.

The course should take employees 25 – 30 minutes to complete. Yes, you can complete the course in sections.

You can complete the course on a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Your device must be connected to Wi-Fi or the internet.

Completion Expectations FAQ’S

UW takes hazing prevention seriously and expects all employees to do the same. Sam’s Law (H.B. 1751) requires all higher education institutions in Washington to provide employees with an educational program on hazing and its dangers.

Your supervisor and the unit that employs you will have further guidance regarding non-completion of the course.

Yes, the training is a requirement for employees to complete each fiscal year.

New employees must complete the course within 30 days of their start date. Existing employees are required to complete this course within 45 days of their unit assignment date.

You will be able to access your course completion documentation on your account. Please visit https://uw.prevent.zone/ to log into your account to access your documentation.

Yes, this course is specific to the University of Washington and contains information every employee needs. This course may build on the information you have learned in other classes.

Student employees are required to complete the student version of this course. You are not required to complete both versions of the course. Please visit the Hazing Prevention Student Course for more information.

Hazing Reporting FAQ’s

Under state legislation, employees who have received information or observed hazing behavior should report the incident at their first opportunity to do so. (RCW 28B.10.907)

The law defines employees as “…a person who is receiving wages from the institution of higher education and is in a position with direct ongoing contact with students in a supervisory role or position of authority….”

You may remain anonymous with your report; however, please provide the following information:

  • Time/Date – if possible
  • Location – if possible
  • Student(s) Involved – please provide a group or individual(s)
  • Description of Event – please provide as much detail as possible
  • Evidence – please upload any evidence you may have (i.e., pictures, text messages) 

Once you submit your report, our office will review the allegations and decide what to do next. 

Yes, UW now offers anonymous reporting of student or organization misconduct for hazing behavior or incidents, funded by the Student Technology Fee. You can text a report, including photos or videos, send an email, or use WhatsApp; your information will be confidential and anonymous. UW will not know your name, phone number/email address unless you share it with us.  

  1. Text 206-203-3435 or email hazingreport@washington.realresponse.com (include any photos or videos you would like to submit as evidence)
  2. An automated response will be sent to confirm receipt of your report.  
  3. You may receive a response text from a UW staff member during normal business hours to ask clarifying questions and acknowledge receipt of your report.  
  4. A case will be created and follow the appropriate process for hazing investigations.

State legislation (Sam’s Law) includes an amnesty policy. The following is the policy:

“A person who witnesses hazing or has reasonable cause to believe hazing has occurred or will occur and makes a report in good faith may not be sanctioned or punished for the violation of hazing unless the person is directly engaged in the planning, direction, or act of hazing reported.” (RCW 28B.10.907)
