In a small village called Tortuga in Nicaragua, 80-year-old Patrosiño Valle lives with his wife in a house that does not have running water. He travels half a mile to collect water from the closest well, which likely contains high levels of bacteria and calcium. Valle’s house is one of 18 in the village not connected to the primary water system due to lack of water pressure. But that’s about to change, thanks to a group of students involved in the UW chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), which helps meet human needs through engineering projects that focus on clean water, energy, sanitation, agriculture and structures.“We can live without power and with washed-out roads, but without water there is no life,” Valle said. Gov. Inslee appoints law student Jaron Goddard as new student regent
Gov. Jay Inslee has named Jaron Goddard as the next student member of the University of Washington Board of Regents for the 2017-18 school year. Goddard is an incoming second-year law student at the UW School of Law and has a Master’s of Public Administration from the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. Her one-year appointment to the Board of Regents is effective July 1. Read more from UW Today.

Northwest Chapter Emmy Award to UWTV, CSNE executive director
Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences honored UWTV and Eric Eric Chudler, executive and education director of UW’s Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering, with an Emmy® Award on Saturday. The award recognized the program “BrainWorks: Exercise and the Brain” in the Health/Science Program/Special category. The program was produced by UW Video Producer Cara Podenski and Chudler, who is also an associate professor of bioengineering at the UW.
