State lawmakers pass capital budget

Olympia lawmakers passed a $4.2 billion construction spending plan on Thursday night. Major projects across the state, including public works projects, mental health facilities, and school construction were postponed since last year when the legislature adjourned without approving a capital budget. Seattle Times urges lawmakers to fund State Need Grant

Today, The Seattle Times editorial board published a piece urging state lawmakers to fully fund the State Need Grant. The board praised the University of Washington for its Husky Promise program, which has allowed 39,000 low-income students to attend the UW tuition-free over the past decade. UW ranks No. 5 nationally for social science research funding

The University of Washington is ranked fifth among more than 400 U.S. colleges and universities for social science research funding, according to a new report.

The Consortium of Social Science Association’s 2018 College and University Rankings for Federal Social and Behavioral Science R&D was released this week. The UW, with $38.6 million in social science funding in fiscal 2016 (the year on which the report was based), has moved up into the top five. Last year, it was seventh. Read more from UW News.
