Preparing for Faculty Hiring in our Current Climate

This live-streamed, Webinar-style workshop will be offered twice but will not be recorded. Please feel free to attend one or the other.

Each workshop will cover: 

  • Brief review of current policy, legal, and political climate for faculty hiring;
  • Planning ahead for forming search committees, faculty search guidelines and charge, writing job ads, drafting assessment rubrics, and devising an active outreach plan;
  • Focused discussion about situations where committee members have prior professional and personal relationships with applicants and how to address potential conflicts of interest, bias, and perceptions of bias.

Troubleshooting Faculty Searches: A Focused Discussion on DEI Statements and Known Applicants

UW ADVANCE and the OFFICE FOR FACULTY ADVANCEMENT partnered to offer a Spring Webinar on troubleshooting faculty searches.

This event was intended for anyone who is leading a unit that is hiring, chairing a search committee, or serving on a search committee.

The webinar focuses on two common challenges: assessing DEI statements and evaluating known candidates.  How units navigate these challenges during the faculty search process can have either positive or negative impacts on their culture.  This webinar explores questions like: What preparatory work should units and search committees do to address potential challenges? How should DEI statements be assessed? What is the potential role of the DEI statement in the assessment process? How should conflicts of interest be defined and managed? What are effective strategies for evaluating known candidates?  By planning for the possibility of encountering challenges like these, units can more successfully navigate the assessment and decision-making process and positively affect their culture.

Debriefing and Auditing Completed Faculty Searches

Your search doesn’t end when the preferred candidate accepts the offer–you still need to review your process and weigh the success of its various stages. Which aspects worked well? And which aspects need improvement? In this webinar, we demonstrate strategies for anchoring your debriefing in the five major decision points of every search: the large pool, the preliminary interviews, the final interviews, the offers, and the hire. We then present a case study of a more comprehensive audit of a completed search, which involves the detailed analysis of one or more of its specific elements. Both practices,debriefing and auditing, will help your unit learn from its recent experiences and better prepare for the next hiring season.

The Office for Faculty Advancement and UW ADVANCE have teamed up to offer a Webinar on practical strategies for running successful faculty searches either mostly or entirely online. We will explore questions like: Which aspects of faculty hiring can be easily adapted to virtual environments, and which aspects may need to be retooled or rethought? How can units run effective committee meetings and deliberations? How can you plan for potentially hosting campus visits through Zoom or similar platforms? How can you and the faculty candidate best get what you want and need from the virtual faculty hiring experience?
