Following the announcement of his plans to leave the UW for Texas A&M, President Young thanked alumni, supporters, educators, employees and students. “For nearly four remarkable years, I have been honored to work alongside you, the world-class faculty, students and staff who make the University of Washington one of the greatest public universities in the world.”

Neighbor Appreciation Day is Feb 14

NAD2015BannerF1Hundreds of people across the City of Seattle will come together on Feb 14th to celebrate Neighbor Appreciation Day. The official day was started in 1995, when Phinney Ridge activist Judith Wood suggested that the City designate “a special day to celebrate the goodness in those around us and to reach out and strengthen our bonds to each other.”

Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed the Saturday before Valentine’s Day as Neighbor Appreciation Day, and it has continued to grow over the years. You can check out events that will be happening in your neighborhood and all around Seattle, or plan your own event using online tools and templates here.

UW workforce housing to open spring 2015

The University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital are partnering with Security Properties to develop Bridges@11th, a project to create a new pool of high-quality housing in the U District. The new community will offer priority access for UW and Children’s employees, and will include larger units and amenities designed for those with families.

When the University acquired several surface parking lots as part of the Safeco Tower purchase, it created an opportunity for the two institutions to partner on the new housing project. Security Properties/Madrona Ridge was chosen to build and operate it.

The UW and Seattle Children’s have a shared interest in creating high-quality and affordable housing for their employees, and in contributing to a vital urban neighborhood. The Bridges@11th community will include 184 total units with a mix of studios, one bedrooms, two bedrooms and three bedrooms. The project also involves a collaboration with the City of Seattle through the Multifamily Property Tax Exemption Program, which allows 20% of the apartment homes to be set aside for those who qualify under the MFTE guidelines.
