BizTech canceled in 2009 to mitigate budget cuts

BizTech, the UW campus technology fair, will not be held in 2009.

“BizTech has been a successful forum for campus service providers to engage the UW community, continuing to attract close to 2,000 visitors after its fifth year,” wrote Scott Mah, associate vice president for UW Technology Services, in his staff blog. “However, the severity of anticipated budget cuts across campus and refocusing resources on ‘the basics and essentials’ this year required some hard choices.”

The fair’s organizers said though canceling the fair this year is unfortunate, they are prioritizing people over such programs in a year of severe budget challenges. Money saved from canceling this year’s BizTech could help protect a UW position from staff reductions.

Clarice Nakata-Hall, UW Technology Services project manager, said, “It is our hope that we will be able to bring BizTech back when the environment is more stable.”

BizTech is sponsored by Finance & Facilities, UW Technology and the Office of Information Management.
