‘Home Movie Day’ features rarely-seen Special Collections films

UW Special Collections Film Archivist Hannah Palin will introduce “Home Movie Day,” an event of the Society of American Archivists UW Student Chapter, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Allen Auditorium. The event is open to members of the UW community.


Palin will introduce the program and provide an overview of important things to know about preserving and caring for film and other moving image media. UW iSchool students will show and comment on personal films. Special guest for the evening is UW Information School alumnus Michael Rene Wood, who will show examples of home movies from his collection of 8mm films.


Rarely-seen selections from UW Special Collections will also be featured:



  • Kerry Collection – Red Riding Hood. Members and friends of an old Seattle family perform a magic trick and stage a whimsical retelling of the fairy tale with the aid of a Model T and a fur coat.
  • Bob Waffenschmidt Home Movies. Beautiful images of a family visit to a location somewhere in the Pacific Northwest coast; and the town of Yakima packs the world’s biggest box of apples, 1934.
  • William F. Lagen Home Movies. Bear cubs, whaling, and images from a settlement in Alaska in the 1920s.
  • (Filmmaker Unknown). 1950s color film of a Native American gathering with dances and canoe races.
