Bridging the Gap Breakfast to celebrate diversity at UW, in the community

Tickets are on sale now for the annual Bridging the Gap Breakfast and silent auction, slated for Saturday, Oct. 27, in the HUB Ballroom.

The celebration, co-emceed by U.S. Congressman Jim McDermott and Vivian Phillips, includes a buffet breakfast, award presentations, a silent auction and entertainment. The event begins at 8 a.m. and is co-sponsored by Macy’s, Pfizer, The Nielsen Company, the UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity and the UW Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

This year’s Distinguished Alumni awards will be presented to:


  • Harold G. Booker, a Seattle-area attorney and chemical engineer who spearheaded efforts to eliminate the segregated housing patterns in Federal Way by organizing the Federal Way Committee for Human Rights and working with the Urban League’s “Operation Equality” Housing Program;
  • Ruthann Kurose, a longtime member and chair of the Bellevue Community College Board of Trustees who has a long history of working on congressional legislative policy in Washington, D.C., and in economic development policy for the cities of Seattle and Tacoma; and
  • Rogelio Riojas, executive director of Sea Mar Community Health Center, which provides comprehensive health and human services to low-income, underserved and uninsured communities in Western Washington, with a specialization in services to Latinos.

The Dr. Samuel E. Kelly Award, which honors community visionaries who support diversity through a broad range of activities, will be presented to Phil Lane, Jr. Lane is CEO of the United Indians of All Tribes and a member of the Yankton Dakota and Chickasaw First Nations. He is an internationally recognized leader in human and community development.

The Community Building Award will be presented to Carolyn Chow. Chow is coordinator of recruitment and admissions for the UW School of Nursing and has been a major force behind the school’s commitment to diversity in recruiting new students. She chairs the Collaborative Access Network on Diversity Outreach and has secured funding to help the school participate in minority nursing conferences

MAP scholarships will be awarded to a multicultural group of economically disadvantaged UW students.

Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward the MAP Endowed Scholarship Fund. Ticket prices are $40 general admission and $400 for a sponsor table of eight.
