Most streets and paths on campus are named for the counties of Washington State. Stevens Way, the main roadway circling campus, is named for Isaac I. Stevens, the first governor of Washington Territory, under whose administration the university came into being.

The University, which opened in 1861, was originally situated on a 10-acre knoll in what is now the center of downtown Seattle. In 1895, it was moved to its present site, which now totals 639 acres.
