Museums and Exhibits

  • Arts UW - A selection of current and upcoming events.
  • Burke Museum - The state museum of natural and cultural history.
  • Henry Art Gallery - Exhibitions and programs on contemporary and modern art.
  • The Jacob Lawrence Gallery - Gallery space located in the School of Art.
  • Meany Hall for the Performing Arts - Hosts a variety of events, ranging from academic arts units to internationally acclaimed performers.
  • UW Botanic Gardens - Sustaining managed and natural ecosystems through plant research, display, and education.
  • UW Libraries Exhibits - Exhibits on the web.
  • Gallager Law Library - Exhibit of contemporary Native American art in the library.
  • UW Fish Collection - The Fish Collection supports teaching and research in the areas of ichthyology, fisheries biology, aquatic biology, conservation, and biodiversity, and provides a source of ichthyological information for the public.

    Over the past 150 years, the University of Washington and the people of Washington state have worked together to create one of the most livable, innovative and vibrant areas of the nation. As we look back on our shared accomplishments, we move forward with excitement about what the next 150 years will bring.

    The stories on our timeline chronicle the history of the UW, but there’s more to tell. We invite you to share your memories, which will be considered for inclusion on the UW Timeline.

    History of the UW

    On Nov. 4, 1861, the Territorial University of Washington began classes in a building located on a site now occupied by the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle. The university was on the outskirts of the village of Seattle, which had a population of 250.
