Information & Visitors Center
How may we help?
We invite you to explore the University of Washington online and in person. The Quick Links and Quick Info in the left column are a good place to start. If you're a prospective student, you also might want to join a student-led campus tour or visit our Admissions page to learn more about how to become a UW student.
Fifty Free Things
There are lots of free things to see and do on the UW Campus. Today, we've picked out:
Memorial Way
Medal of Honor Memorial
Celebrate Memorial Day with a visit to Memorial Way. At the NE 45th Street entrance, two stone pylons carry plaques listing the names of the 58 UW alumni, faculty and students who lost their lives in World War I. Walk under the quarter-mile canopy of 58 sycamore trees planted on Armistice Day, 1920 (and more planted since) to the campus flagpole, bearing names of faculty, staff, students and alumni who died in World War II. Pause and reflect at the sculpture that honors the UW Alumni who are recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The University of Washington is a place where extraordinary things happen.
Things that change the way the entire world thinks, works and lives. It’s a culture that is unlike any other. Experience it for yourself.
150 Years of Great Stories!
On Nov. 4, 1861, the Territorial University of Washington began classes in a building located on a site now occupied by the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle. The university was on the outskirts of the village of Seattle, which had a population of 250.
Over the past 150 years, the UW and the people of Washington state have worked together to create one of the most livable, innovative and vibrant places in the nation.
The stories on our 150th Timeline chronicle the past and the present. We invite you to share your memories on the UW Timeline.
