Scholarship Strengthens UW's Ties
to Yakama Nation
Since 1990, more than 10 Yakama Nation members have graduated from the college. "We use the science we learned through school, but incorporate the values of our people," says Philip Rigdon, '96. Through her role at the Cascade Land Conservancy, Ara Erickson, ‘04, works to restore and manage forested lands in our region’s cities and suburban areas, developing community-based stewardship programs for forested parklands and community open spaces. What do you get when you cross a rabbit with a tree? Less pollution. No joke. CFR researchers working with UW, Oregon State University and Purdue University recently discovered that poplar trees gobble up toxic chemicals from the air and water when inoculated with rabbit genes. Read more ...
