This year the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity (OMA&D) will celebrate its 50th anniversary — a significant milestone for the entire university. OMA&D’s origins stretch back to May 20, 1968, when members of the Black Student Union and their supporters demanded an increased university commitment to diversity. UW leadership responded by establishing the office that is now known as OMA&D.

Since that day, OMA&D has carried out that commitment with a suite of programs impacting college access and academic success for underrepresented minority, low-income and first-generation students. Top fundraising priorities as a part of the UW’s current campaign are:

  • The next phase of construction for wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House, a home for Native learning on campus
  • The Instructional Center, providing instructional support to students since 1970
  • Educational Opportunity Program Scholarships, expanding access to education and changing the lives of students, their families and communities
