Shane Small is an MBA candidate at the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. An Army veteran, Shane is translating nearly a decade of experience in leadership, strategy, and service into a career in finance. Most recently, he spent his MBA internship with J.P. Morgan’s Private Bank and plans to return to the firm’s Seattle office following graduation.
Shane was born and raised in Issaquah, Washington, where he attended Liberty High School. A lifelong Washingtonian and former student-athlete, he has fond memories of playing football at Husky Stadium – including wins over teams led by future Huskies Kasen Williams and Jeff Lindquist, though Budda Baker ultimately got the better of him in the state championship.
Shane attended Central Washington University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management. While at CWU, he participated in Army ROTC for all four years and ultimately served as the program’s Cadet Battalion Commander. More importantly, CWU is also where he met his wife, Joely Manning. Both participated in Army ROTC and commissioned as officers following graduation.
Shane commissioned as an Infantry Officer in 2017 and went on to graduate from U.S. Army Ranger School and Airborne School before being assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division (Airborne) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Joely, a Quartermaster Officer, was stationed there alongside him. From Alaska, they were both assigned to the historic 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy, where they each served as Company Commanders and deployed on missions and exercises throughout Europe and Africa.
After nearly a decade of military service and adventure together, Shane and Joely decided it was time to come home. They are now both pursuing MBAs at the University of Washington. Joely is focused on supply chain management, where she hopes to apply her extensive military logistics experience, while Shane is pursuing a career in private banking and wealth management.
Outside of school and work, Shane and Joely spend much of their time with their golden retriever, Gilbert, and are excited to be back in the Seattle area establishing roots for the next chapter of their lives.
