Real DAWGS Read

Readers are leaders!

Real Dawgs Read is a summer reading program developed for K-8, Title I schools in Washington state. There is no cost to schools or participants (postage is covered); it is simply a way to incent students to read over the summer. Participants read at least 30 minutes a day over 30 separate days to earn a Husky reward and reading certificate. During the summer of 2021, 734 students from 121 schools completed the program and earned their choice of a Husky hat, beanie or cinch backpack. We received many special messages from students and parents, like this one:

“Hello, I wanted to thank you for the UW summer reading challenge. My son Orson really took it to heart and read a lot over the summer. Your program was his main motivation! Orson never read books without pictures in them before your program. It has been amazing to see his progress!”

Over the years, UW licensees Zephyr Headwear, Logo Brands and Strideline Socks have donated merchandise which rewards successful readers.

This program is possible because of generous support from AT&T and Starbucks.

Start reading today! Books, comic books, magazines, newspapers — YOU choose. Read alone, read aloud, read with friends, have someone read to you. Just read, and you’ll be dressed like a Dawg in no time!
