Thomas Hinckley climbed Mount St. Helens before the 1980 eruption as well as after and also conducted years of research on the mountain, studying aspects such as the immediate and long-term effects of ash on trees. He can speak to the novelty of being able to begin research on a landscape not unlike the surface of moon as soon as the first of week of July 1980.
Hinckley can also talk about ecological lessons learned as well as lessons discovered on the risks associated with volcanoes.
