In 2023, the Seattle City Council made history by passing the nation’s first law to recognize caste as a protected class under anti-discrimination protections in employment, public spaces, housing, and contracting. This landmark decision prompts critical questions for both South Asians and the broader community: What is the caste system? How does it shape our everyday lives? And why is it becoming increasingly relevant in the United States?
