HMC Department of Surgery

Course Overview

Welcome to the General Surgery, Trauma, and Critical Care Rotation at Harborview Medical Center!

The Division of General Surgery at Harborview Medical Center has an important and unique role in the education of medical students.

Students integrate on to the General Surgery team by working with residents, fellows, and faculty to see patients on the General Surgery, Trauma, andĀ Burn services. Over the course of the 6 week rotation, each student will spend 4 weeks with the General Surgery Trauma team, 1 week with the Burn Care team and 1 week one night shift.

Students participate in and contribute to the team-approach to managing elective and emergency general surgery conditions and oversight of the management of complex trauma victims. Activities include patient care and assessment in both an inpatient andĀ outpatient setting, observation and participation in the operating room, attendance of weekly conferences, and didactic experience with faculty.

Students receive direct feedback on their performance during their time at Harborview Medical Center.
