Faculty and instructors are encouraged to include the following recommended statements in their course syllabi to help promote student safety, support, and awareness of hazing prevention.
Syllabus statement on hazing prevention and reporting
It is the policy and practice at the University of Washington to create safe and inclusive environments both inside and outside the classroom. In alignment with this commitment, UW strictly prohibits any form of hazing. Hazing undermines the values of respect, dignity, and community that are central to our academic and social environment. By participating in any university-affiliated group or activity, you are expected to uphold these values and ensure that your conduct contributes to a culture of safety and mutual support. Any behavior that constitutes hazing, whether overt or subtle, is a violation of university policy and will be addressed accordingly.
To support a safe environment, UW uses RealResponse, an anonymous tool for reporting hazing funded by the Student Technology Fee. Students can text 206-203-3435 with details of the incident, including who was involved, when and where it happened, and whether it’s ongoing. You may attach photos or videos. Reports are confirmed automatically, and staff may follow up during business hours. Each report is reviewed and handled according to UW’s hazing investigation process.
