The University of Washington has created and operated a Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee (HPAC) since the passage of Sam’s Law in March 2022. The purpose of the committee is to bring stakeholders across the university together to discuss, promote, and address hazing prevention.
State Legislation
The University of Washington will develop and operate a hazing prevention committee to promote and address hazing prevention. The committee should compromise students, faculty/staff, and at least one parent/guardian of a student enrolled in the university. Half of the committee should comprise of students. (RCW 28B.10.905)
Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee
The Hazing Prevention Advisory Committee, appointed by Vice President of Student Life Denzil Suite, provides guidance and support for hazing prevention work at all UW campuses and locations.

Data and Assessment Subcommittee
The Assessment and Data subcommittee is charged with utilizing best practices to determine assessment needs and analyzing multiple forms of data collection of hazing prevention efforts, including workshops, training of incoming students, campus surveys, and more. The subcommittee will develop reports to share with the full committee and executive leadership, as needed, to show the effectiveness of training and trends on campus.
Education and Training Subcommittee
The Education & Training Subcommittee is thus charged with developing and facilitating the implementation of curricula for employees and students across the university system.
Hazing Prevention Initiatives Subcommittee
The Hazing Prevention Initiatives Subcommittee is tasked with developing and hosting hazing behavior and prevention campaigns across the system.
Policy Development
The Policy Development Subcommittee is charged with reviewing and proposing revisions to university policies that address hazing behavior, developing policies surrounding hazing prevention training, and ensuring the policies are aligned with Washington’s Anti-Hazing Law and federal and local law.
