UW Professor of History Vincente Rafael was featured in a story in The Wall Street Journal last week discussing the rich and complex history of the Phillipine city of Tacloban before Typhoon Haiyan.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is seeking input about a proposed neighborhood greenway on 12th Avenue NE for people who walk or ride bikes between Ravenna Boulevard and the Burke-Gilman Trail. Data for this proposal contributed in part by the 2013 U District Urban Design Framework report, part of the University District Livability Partnership.

The University of Washington’s sustainability leadership was recognized  at the fifth annual Green Washington Awards on October 29th, where the UW received the Silver Award in the Academia category – one of 12 categories honoring the 22 top sustainability-minded organizations. The UW consistently ranks among the top environmentally-friendly schools in the United States.

Representatives of the National League of Cities will take time from their national conference in downtown Seattle today to learn about the innovative University District Livability Partnership, a 4-Year strategic initiative between the community, the University, and the City of Seattle to work toward the betterment of the U District neighborhood, both now and in the decades ahead.

Bill Frisell, one of modern jazz’s premier guitarists,has joined the Jazz Studies Program in the School of Music as an affiliate professor and will interact with jazz students and faculty when he’s home in Seattle.
