Election Rumors, Conspiracy Theories and Democracy

Thurs. May 2, 2024      5–6 p.m.

Online

UW Impact and the UW Center for an Informed Public (CIP) present a critical online conversation about one of today’s most urgent questions: the proliferation of online misinformation and its effect on our society.

Postdoctoral scholar Mert Can Bayar will share insights about how election rumors and conspiracy theories can shape democracy, including insights from the CIP’s rapid research team studying the 2024 U.S. elections.

About the Speaker

Trained as a political scientist, Mert Can Bayar’s work includes studying and identifying when conspiracy theories become divisive and destructive to democratic politics, and when they lead to democratic reactions and unification of democratic forces.
