From the HMB Director

A salute to the 2017 HMB undergraduate student leadership

Friends of the Husky Marching Band,

The 2017 edition of the Husky Band is off to a great start! It’s hard for me to believe that we are almost halfway through the season. Of course, with 240 band members, it takes a large staff to ensure that rehearsals and performances run smoothly so the band is  ready for each game day. Although I am blessed with a highly qualified and dedicated senior staff of part-time and volunteer assistants, the band also relies on a handful of exceptional undergraduates to keep on track. These dedicated students carry out tasks that are assigned to graduate students at many universities, and they are essential to running the band. Here they are:

Undergraduate Assistant – Brian Huynh (Seattle, WA – Roosevelt HS)

Staff Assistant – Sophie Beck (Seattle, WA – Roosevelt HS)

Staff Assistant – Robert Karren (Kingston, WA – Kingston HS)

Staff Assistant – Michelle You (Mercer Island, WA – Mercer Island HS)

Music Librarian – Kaylie Firebaugh (Kirkland, WA – Bellevue Christian HS)

Uniform Manager – Anne Phan (Olympia, WA – Capital HS)

Attendance Officer – Maranda Sianghio (Kent, WA – John F. Kennedy Catholic HS)

Our section leaders oversee sectional rehearsals and coordinate activities within each section. This position is highly competitive, with auditions in the spring and a comprehensive interview process. You might also be surprised to know that most of our section leaders each year are not music majors. They are:

Piccolo – Jenni Logue (El Dorado Hills, CA – Oak Ridge HS)

Piccolo – Sarah Nishikawa (Sunnyvale, CA – Saint Francis HS)

Clarinet – Patricia Au (Honolulu, HI – Saint Andrew’s Priory)

Clarinet – Hannah Mansoori (Vancouver, WA – Columbia River HS)

Alto Sax – Sarah Randall (Seattle, WA – Roosevelt HS)

Tenor Sax – Laurel Meredith (Fall City, WA – Eastside Catholic HS)

Trumpet – Tracey Andrews (La Canada Flintridge, CA – La Canada HS)

Trumpet – Sean Fleming (Irvine, CA – Northwood HS)

Mellophone – Nathan Santo Domingo (Sumner, WA – Sumner HS)

Trombone – Tyler Fost (Pound Ridge, NY – John Jay HS)

Trombone – Carter Johnson (Bellingham, WA – Sehome HS)

Baritone – Melody Wagner (Montgomery Village, MD – Watkins Mill HS)

Sousaphone – Jeffrey Whaley (Burlington, WA – Burlington-Edison HS)

Drumline – Chris Serica (Arlington, WA – Arlington HS)

I am continually indebted to the 21 undergraduate students who hold these extremely important student leadership positions. I hope that whenever you see the band perform this year — whether it be at a football game, volleyball game, or at an event in the greater Seattle area — you’ll appreciate the huge role these students play in the performance you’re seeing and in the great year we are having!
