TCAC July 2000 Report to the Provost

Section C -- Formalizing the Program on Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) across the Three Campuses

In the course of the TCAC's consideration of improving cross-campus opportunities for students, Elizabeth Feetham, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, was invited to share with the committee perspectives on this subject, which were developed within the Graduate School. She responded by visiting with the committee and by providing the attached initiative for formalizing the UW PFF program over all three campuses (Appendix J). The committee understood how the program benefits both UWS graduate students and the partnering faculty at UWB and UWT and thus, in principle, favors the formalization proposed in the initiative. However, representatives on the TCAC from UWB and UWT were concerned about the explicit language in the initiative calling for establishing "two pre-doctoral associate II positions at each campus, to be matched by one such position from each campus as a pilot project."

They felt that uncertainties in future funding for UWB and UWT and the concomitant uncertainties in predicting faculty workload make it problematic, at this time, to advise the Provost to establish three annual, pre-doctoral II positions at UWB and UWT. Although the problems stemming from the uncertainties were not resolved within the 1999-2000 academic year, they almost certainly will be in the fall of 2000.
