In its 1999 Report, the TCAC identified "four ideas and principles" deemed "essential to the continuing successful development of the Three Campus University of Washington." The fourth is "Effective Communication within the Three Campus University (and often beyond) also will be critical to sustaining successful development over time." The following "story" about managing tuition waivers explicitly illustrates the impact that effective communication can have.
In the first half of this year, the TCAC discussed tuition waivers in the context of considering cross-campus opportunities for students. In the course of that consideration, Eric Godfrey, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, provided information about the then current practices in administering both the "3%" need-based and the "1%" discretionary tuition waivers. His letter of June 5, 2000 (Appendix I) is strong testimony to the power of the simple act of sharing and discussing key, three-campus information. He reports that, as a direct result of his discussion with the TCAC, there has been a change in administering both waivers. UWB and UWT now have the option of giving their students access to the "1%" discretionary waivers, and neither UWB nor UWT are disproportionately impacted in the administration of the "3%" program.
