Attorney General Bob Ferguson has appointed Senior Counsel Karin Nyrop as the new chief of his office’s University of Washington Division. The division provides legal services to the university, including UW Bothell, UW Tacoma and the UW Medical Center.

“The University of Washington will be well served by Karin’s impressive combination of legal expertise, leadership experience, personal achievements and demonstrated commitment to public service,” said Ferguson in a statement.

Nyrop brings 30 years of legal experience to this position. She has been with the division for 17 years, serving in a variety of roles, including assistant attorney general, team leader and most recently interim division chief. She is also a lecturer on design and construction law for graduate students in the UW’s Construction Management Program in the College of Built Environments.

Before joining the attorney general’s office in 1997, Nyrop served as a Washington Supreme Court clerk, a private litigation attorney and a King County deputy prosecuting attorney.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Saint Martin’s University and graduated magna cum laude from the Seattle University School of Law.

The division at the UW provides a broad range of legal advice and representation in a variety of areas, including employment law, labor relations, student affairs, real estate, intercollegiate athletics, intellectual property, tax, benefits, constitutional law, gifts and trusts, and health care law.
