Lost and Found Films: ‘Womens Classes, circa 1965
Set your Wayback machines for 1965 again this week as we present this black and white, 96-second film appropriately titled Womens Classes, circa 1965.
The film shows a couple dozen women studiously listening to a lecture by a male teacher or professor. Then, bags in hand, hems near the knee, they exit the classroom — which seems to be at the Seattle Centers Northwest Rooms— and are seen walking across the center grounds. In the foggy distance is the then-4-year-old Space Needle.
This is one of hundreds of reels of film that Hannah Palin, film archives specialist with UW Libraries Special Collections, is trying to identify for archiving purposes. She has film clips from the late 1930s through the 1970s — some from research projects, some from campus events and some from commercial films or original productions.
“We dont kow much about this clip” other than whats obvious, Palin said. “Any information about womens education, outreach, extension or classes taught off-campus — and the use of Seattle Center — would be most welcome.”
