Elm tree to be removed

An elm tree that is east of the flagpole at the south end of Memorial Way is being removed. The tree has been positively identified as having Dutch elm disease, said UW Arborist Sara Shores, and requires immediate removal to prevent beetles from spreading to other elms in the area.

“We will be choosing a different species to replant because the disease will still be in the roots for a few years,” Shores said.

Work on the tree will be carried out Aug. 30 and 31.
