UW Tumor Vaccine Group to hold open house Oct. 14

The UW Tumor Vaccine Group is hosting an open house for the public Thursday evening, Oct. 14. The free event takes place at the UW Medicine South Lake Union campus, 815 Mercer St., Seattle. The theme of the open house is “You and Your Immunity:Fighting Cancer Biologically.”

Come learn about cancer vaccine clinical trials, visit a UW Medicine lab, and talk with doctors, researchers, patients and staff. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet with advocacy group representatives from the Puget Sound area, and find out what it takes to make clinical trials happen from the patient and researcher perspective.

Lab tours will include stations showing details about clinical trials by the UW Tumor Vaccine Group; research techniques and equipment that help researchers identify human tumor antigens (molecules recognized by the body’s immune system); and a first-hand chance to see “Big Momma” (the large, yet precious, specimen storage vat) and tissue culture rooms dedicated to cellular experimentation.

The event will also include formal presentations by director Dr. Mary L. “Nora” Disis and other members of the Tumor Vaccine Group clinical and research teams, as well as a panel discussion.

The open house schedule is:

5 p.m. Doors open
