Close-up on photography at the Burke Aug. 14



The Burke Museum is offering a day dedicated to the art and craft of photography on Saturday, Aug. 14.


Lectures and workshops on the latest techniques and advancements in the field will be led by preeminent nature photographers Paul Bannick, John Greengo and Mark Turner. The program, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is being presented in conjunction with the International Conservation Photography Awards exhibit currently on view at the Burke. It is free with museum admission.


The schedule is:


10:30 a.m., The Photographer’s Eye with John Greengo

John Greengo offers an insightful perspective on how photographers look at the world a bit differently than most people. As a professional photographer based in Seattle, Greengo has traveled to all seven continents as part of the production team of Art Wolfe’s TV show, Travels to the Edge.


11:30 a.m., Close-Up Photography with Mark Turner

Mark Turner, co-author of Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest, will discuss lens and camera choice, lighting, and composition for macro photography. Explore the effects of depth of field, selective focus, and subject selection as you discover new ways to capture the beauty of the natural world.


1 p.m., Long Lens Photography with Paul Bannick

Paul Bannick, author of The Owl and the Woodpecker, will offer tips for capturing compelling images of wildlife in their natural habitat, including how to find subjects, anticipate behavior, and make the right choices in terms of equipment and technical trade-offs.


2 p.m.The Photographer’s Eye with John Greengo

A repeat of the 10:30 a.m. session.


Canon and Kenmore Camera will be on hand throughout the day to offer equipment demonstrations and answer technical questions.
