Challenges of environmental governance is topic of talk by Miles

A UW expert on climate change and planning for its consequences — someone whose advice has been sought at every level from the local Puget Sound basin to the international Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — will ask the question Whither Ocean Governance? Is Effective Management the Holy Grail? in a special lecture Friday, June 4.

Ed Miles is former director and current professor in the School of Marine Affairs and founder and co-director of the UW-based Climate Impacts Group. He’s retiring from teaching after 36 years at the UW. He will continue his research as a professor emeritus.

His valedictory talk and a panel discussion on the challenges of environmental governance in the 21st Century are planned Friday, 1-5 p.m., William Gates Hall, Room 138. The event is free and open to the public.

The panel presentation from 1 to 4 p.m. concerns the Law of the Sea, fisheries, climate impacts and services and the science of sustainability, with invited speakers from the United States and Canada. Miles speaks starting at 4 p.m., followed by a reception.

Miles is being recognized for his contributions to international governance of natural resources and environmental challenges, particularly in the domains of marine and fisheries policy and climate change.

The event sponsors invite the UW community to join in the celebration of Miles’ achievements and his contributions to the global community. For more information, or if you are interested in attending the 7 p.m. dinner, please contact the Climate Impacts Group office, 206-616-5350, cig@uw.edu.
